ARTWORK INFORMATION
TITLE: When A Leaf Tears
SERIES: Passage
YEAR: 2023
Passage is a series of wall relief sculptures that explores transformation through form, material, and language. Constructed from hand-shaped wood, paint, and hand-stamped text, the works occupy a space between painting and sculpture, where surfaces begin to unfold and static forms appear to move beyond their boundaries.
Curved, folded, and layered elements emerge from the wall, creating shifting relationships between light, shadow, colour, and depth. Repeated impressions of the words “hope” and “choice” become embedded within the material, functioning less as declarations than as traces—accumulated marks that suggest persistence, uncertainty, and the continuous process of becoming.
Drawing inspiration from natural processes of growth, change, and renewal, the series reflects on moments of transition rather than fixed states. Forms appear suspended between unfolding and retreat, concealment and revelation, inviting viewers to encounter the work as a passage through shifting perceptions and possibilities.
Rather than depicting nature directly, the sculptures draw upon its rhythms and transformations, creating spaces where material, language, and imagination intersect.
